NICARAGUA (SHG EP Royal Momotombo)

Coffee production in this large but thinly populated country has suffered for a long time between devastating hurricanes and political and financial instability. Nevertheless, coffee is Nicaragua's main export and producers are keen to continue and develop their agricultural practices within an improving infrastructure in order to revive their reputation in the specialty coffee scene. The northern region of Nueva Segovia consistently produces some of the country's finest coffees of mainly Caturra variety. Smallholder farmers sell their coffees lo large dry mills, called beneficios. This blend is called Momotombo, named after the long-inactive volcano right at the shores of Lago Xolotlan opposite Nicaragua's capital Managua. The volcano was quiet since its last eruption in 1905 up until 2015 when it produced lava for the first time in 110 years. When diming Momotombo nowadays (translated momo - peach / tombo - dragonfly), the orange afternoon sun and the constantly overflying dragonfly made this name a symbol for "a perfect coffee moment".
