Cold brew is brewed with time, not heat. It’s smooth, mellow, and easy to batch for the week. Many people experience cold brew as lower in perceived acidity — not because “acidity disappears,” but because cold extraction highlights a different balance.

What cold brew is best at

Cold brew tends to be:

  • smooth and mellow

  • low in perceived sharpness

  • easy to serve iced

  • great with milk

If you want bright, aromatic florals and crisp acidity, hot filter brewing usually shows that better.


What you need

  • coarse grinder (recommended)

  • jar or jug

  • filter method (paper filter / cloth / fine sieve + paper)

  • fridge or cool place

  • scale (recommended)


Recipe A: Ready‑to‑drink cold brew (easy)

  • Coffee: 100 g (coarse)

  • Water: 1 L

  • Time: 12–16 hours

  • Steep: room temp or fridge (fridge is slower, often cleaner)

Steps

  1. Add coffee and water to a jar. Stir gently.

  2. Cover and steep 12–16 hours.

  3. Strain through a fine sieve.

  4. Filter again through paper filter for a cleaner cup (optional but recommended).

  5. Serve over ice.


Recipe B: Cold brew concentrate (for milk or faster serving)

  • Coffee: 150 g

  • Water: 1 L

  • Steep: 12–18 hours

After filtering, dilute to taste:

  • 1:1 with water for a strong iced black

  • 1:1 with milk for an iced latte style

  • Adjust based on preference


Filtering tips (to avoid cloudy bitterness)

  • First strain removes grounds

  • Second filter (paper) improves clarity and reduces grit

  • Don’t squeeze the grounds aggressively — it can add bitterness and fines


Troubleshooting

Too strong / too intense

Dilute with water or milk, or reduce coffee ratio next batch.

Too weak

Increase coffee, steep a bit longer, or grind slightly finer (small changes).

Bitter / harsh

  • steeped too long at warm temp, or

  • too many fines, or

  • squeezed/filtering too aggressively

Fix:

  • grind coarser

  • filter more gently

  • shorten steep time slightly

Flat / dull

Often:

  • water quality

  • old coffee

  • too much dilution

Choosing coffee for cold brew

Cold brew often shines with:
