French Press Guide

French press is one of the simplest ways to brew coffee with a full body and a satisfying, rounded texture. It’s forgiving, requires minimal gear, and works beautifully for “comfort‑style” coffees.

This guide gives you:

  • a reliable baseline recipe

  • the easiest way to avoid bitterness and sludge

  • taste-based troubleshooting

  • how to choose coffee for French press

Why French press works (and what it’s best at)

French press tends to produce coffee that is:

  • fuller in body (more oils and texture)

  • rich and comforting

  • great for everyday drinking

If you prefer ultra-clean clarity and delicate aromatics, pour‑over may suit you better. If you love body and richness, French press is perfect.

What you need

  • French press

  • kettle

  • grinder (recommended)

  • scale (recommended)

  • timer (phone is fine)

Baseline recipe (best starting point)

French press baseline (2 cups)

  • Coffee: 30 g

  • Water: 500 g

  • Ratio: 1:16–1:17

  • Grind: coarse (coarser than pour‑over)

  • Total time: 4:00–5:00

Method (simple + consistent)

  1. Preheat the press with hot water (optional but helpful).

  2. Add 30 g coffee.

  3. Start timer. Add water to 500 g.

  4. Stir gently for 5–10 seconds to wet all grounds.

  5. Put the lid on with plunger pulled up (do not press yet).

  6. At 4:00, press slowly and steadily.

  7. Pour immediately into cups (or decant into another vessel). This reduces bitterness.

Key habit: don’t let it sit on the grounds after pressing.

Cleaner cup tip (less sludge, less bitterness)

After pressing, pour gently and stop before the very last cloudy layer.
French press naturally has more texture — that’s the style — but you can keep it pleasantly clean.

Troubleshooting by taste

Sour / sharp / thin

Under‑extracted. Try:

  • grind finer (slightly)

  • steep longer (e.g., 4:30–5:00)

  • use hotter water

Bitter / dry / harsh

Over‑extracted. Try:

  • grind coarser

  • steep slightly shorter (3:30–4:00)

  • press more gently (avoid aggressive plunging)

  • decant immediately after pressing

Muddy / gritty

Try:

  • grind coarser

  • pour more gently

  • avoid over-stirring

  • let it sit 20 seconds after pressing before pouring
